The selection of horses for performance was based on test data and the results of their use in agricultural work. Much attention was paid to selecting horses based on ancestry and typicality.

Homogeneous selection was used within the breeding core, and heterogeneous selection was used throughout the population as a whole. These selections reinforced the desired traits of the parents—adaptability, longevity, type, and endurance. A purebred line breeding method is used. Currently, six main lines and 13 families are recognized.

At a meeting on April 23, 1997, the Council for Livestock Breeding and the expert commission that it created, guided by the "Regulations on the Approval of Breeding Achievements in Livestock Breeding," approved by the USSR Ministry of Agriculture on November 9, 1976, concluded that the examined stock of Belarusian draft horses met the requirements for developing horse breeds.

Order No. 132 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Belarus, dated May 25, 2000, approved the horse breed developed on farms in the Republic of Belarus and assigned it the name "Belarusian Draft."

The State Enterprise "ZhodinoAgroPlemElhita" is a large breeding farm in the Smolevichi District, founded in 2011 and serving as the base farm for the Republican Unitary Enterprise "Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Animal Breeding"
