Description
The UE “Geoinformation systems” was determined as the organization operating the BSSERS by the No. 464 Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus dated October 22, 2003 “On the creation of the Belarusian space system for remote sensing of the Earth”.

Subsequently, the Enterprise was designated as the National Operator of the Belarusian Space System for Earth Remote Sensing (hereinafter referred to as BSSERS) in order to operate the BSSERS and the Belarusian satellite, as well as interacting with organizations involved in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes (the No. 609 Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus of December 22, 2004 "On the implementation of the state policy of the Republic of Belarus in the field of exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes").
Within the Belarusian Space System for Earth Remote Sensing (BSRSE) there were created its relevant orbital and ground segments.

Initially, the orbital segment consisted of the Belarusian satellite (BS) and the Kanopus-V No. 1 satellite (developed by JSC VNIIEM Corporation with international cooperation of different enterprises), both launched into orbit on July 22, 2012.
Guided by the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Russian Federation on cooperation in the field of exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes dated March 15, 2011, on January 21, 2020, an Agreement was concluded on expanding the capabilities of the orbital constellation of remote sensing satellites by using the information resource of the Russian Kanopus-V No. 3, 4, 5, 6 and Kanopus-V-IK satellites.

The ground segment, which includes the Mission Control Center and the Telemetry, Tracking, Ranging and Commanding Center, contains hardware and software for receiving imaging requests, planning, images acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of remote sensing data from space.

Data application fields:
- Inventory of natural resources (agricultural and forest lands, pastures, etc.) and monitoring of economic processes to ensure rational activity in rural, forestry, and other sectors of the state economy;
- Generation and updating of topographic maps, general geographic and thematic maps, management of state topographic maps and of the state topographic monitoring;
- Creation of digital elevation models;
- Monitoring of the pollution and degradation of the natural environment;
- Disasters monitoring (floods, droughts, landslides, etc.);
- State environmental monitoring;
- Inventory and control of construction of infrastructure facilities;
- and so on.

Advantages and Innovations
The creation of the BKSDZ is the first national system-level project in the field of exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes. Its strategic goal is the development and implementation into the daily practice of Belarus of modern methods and means of state administration and economic activity, based on the wide use of remote sensing data and geoinformation technologies.

Additional comments
«Geoinformation systems» Scientific and Engineering Enterprise was created in 1996 by Resolution of the Bureau of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus dated June 27, 1996, No. 62: «On the creation of self-sustained scientific and engineering centers of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus».

The enterprise began to work in 1996 within the framework of the “Minimization and Overcoming of the Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Disaster” and “Emergency Situations” for 1996-2000 State Scientific and Technical Programs. The enterprise took part in the Union State program known as “Development and Use of Space Facilities and Technologies for Receiving, Processing, and Displaying Space Information” (“Cosmos-BR”) (1999-2003).

The enterprise was designated as the National Operator of the Belarusian Space System for Earth Remote Sensing (hereinafter referred to as BSSERS) with the purpose of operating the BSSERS and Belarusian satellite, as well as interacting with organizations involved in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.

The Space Information Reception Center was established in 2006. The "National Program for Studying and Use of the Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes for 2008-2012" was approved by No. 1517 Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus dated 14.10.2008, which includes the "Development of the Belarusian Space System for Remote Sensing of the Earth" subprogram. Within the framework of this subprogram, the enterprise created the infrastructure and basic technologies of the Belarusian Space System for Earth Remote Sensing, ensuring the functioning and operation of the BKA satellite, meeting the needs of users for services and data on Earth remote sensing, both from the BKA and from prospective foreign satellites.

The Belarusian satellite was successfully launched on July 22, 2012.

The enterprise has been a member of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters since 2019.

The enterprise, as the lead organization, participated in the implementation of tasks and activities of the "Exploration and Use of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes" subprogram 7 of the "High-tech and Technology" for 2016-2020 state program and is currently participating as the lead organization in the implementation of tasks and activities of the "Exploration and Use of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes" subprogram 6 of the "High-tech and Technology" for 2021-2025 state program.
