Description
The Institute of Microbiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has developed microbial preparation «BioKiT» for decontamination of aqueous solutions polluted with xylene and toluene.

The based of preparation is consortium of microorganisms degrading xylene and toluene;
titer – not less than 1.0x1010 CFU/ml.

The efficiency decontamination of aqueous solutions is:
* from xylene - 75..99%;
* from toluene - 80..100%;
depending on concentration of toxicants.

The degree of detoxification of multicomponent effluents containing xylene, toluene and related substances is 80..95% in terms of COD.

The use of microbial preparation in absorption-biochemical installations allows:
* ensure purification of aqueous absorbents from xylene and toluene by 80..99%;
* saves biological treatment costs by minimizing the amount of spent materials and reagents;
* lowers expenses for aeration of absorption solutions;
* reduces occupational health risks for personnel employed at high-hazard operations;
* prevents environmental damage from air discharges of industrial toxicants.

The introduction of biopreparation into wastewater as an activator of sludge mixture allows:
* achieve stability of biological treatment systems operating at shock input levels and exposed to high concentrations of xylene and toluene;
* increase of wastewater treatment efficiency;
* alleviate the adverse impact on the environment.

«BioKiT» is regarded as eco-friendly low-hazard (4 class) biopreparation.

Advantages and Innovations
There are no analogues. Environmentally friendly, highly concentrated prolonged-action preparation. Does not require constant application.

The efficiency of purification of aqueous solutions from xylene is 75-99%, toluene - 80-100% depending on the concentration of toxicants. The degree of purification of multicomponent wastewater containing xylene, toluene and related substances is 80-95% by COD.

The use of the microbial preparation in absorption and biochemical units (ABCU) allows for the purification of aqueous absorbents from xylene and toluene by 80-99%; reduce material costs for purification due to the minimum amount of consumables and reagents, reduce the cost of aeration of absorption solutions, reduce the risk of occupational diseases of employees involved in hazardous production, prevent environmental damage from emissions of highly toxic compounds into the atmosphere.

The biological product is non-toxic, non-pathogenic, non-flammable, non-explosive, non-corrosive, harmless to the environment, humans, plants (hazard class IV).

The Institute of Microbiology is the leading research center of the Republic of Belarus in the field of microbiology and biotechnology. The Institute's arsenal of innovative developments includes substances for medicines and diagnostics, biopreservatives, feed and food additives, biodisinfectants, probiotics, plant protection products, microbial fertilizers, wastewater and environmental treatment technologies that are in demand by the economy, and specific recommendations for combating biodamage.
