Summary
The Central Botanical Garden offers consumers services for familiarization and use for research, educational purposes and for the purpose of preserving biological diversity of the collection "Rare and Endangered Species of Natural Flora of Belarus" under an outsourcing agreement and is looking for partners interested in a distribution services agreement.
Description
At the end of the vegetation period of 2013, the collection "Rare and Endangered Plant Species of the Natural Flora of Belarus" contained 133 species (163 species specimens) belonging to 98 genera of 44 families (Figure) and included:
- 3 species (category 0), considered extinct from the territory of our republic due to the lack of specific data on their locations, but their growth on the territory of Belarus is either documented by a herbarium or indicated in literary sources;
- 14 species (category I vulnerability) of the highest national conservation significance, having very low or rapidly declining numbers, as a result of which they may disappear in the near future;
- 19 species (category II vulnerability), having low numbers, a tendency to decrease and a predicted deterioration in status in the near future, but with properly organized protection they may still survive;
- 33 species (vulnerability category III) that are not directly threatened with extinction, but are at risk of extinction if the factors that caused the reduction in their numbers continue to act;
- 21 species (vulnerability category IV) with a low risk of extinction, with a declining population, but with properly organized protection capable of restoring it to a level that does not cause concern;
- 43 species (preventive protection) that require increased attention, in need of study, observation and control (some are considered as likely candidates for inclusion in the republican Red Book of the next edition).
Research focus.
- Replenishment of the species diversity of rare and endangered plants of the natural flora of Belarus and its conservation in culture.
- Comprehensive assessment of the collection fund, including phenological development, the ability to seed and vegetative reproduction, resistance to environmental factors, diseases and pests.
- Development of technological methods for growing planting material.
- Creation of artificial coenopopulations with the purpose of restoring their numbers within the historical range, i.e. in the natural habitat.
- Evaluation of plants by economically useful characteristics.
More information about the structure of plant collections can be found on the website of the Central Botanical Garden here.
The Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus provides material to botanical gardens and research institutions in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio de Janeiro, June 5, 1992). The institution ordering seeds or plant material accepts and undertakes to fulfill all the conditions listed below, which can be found here.

Additional comments
The Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is the leading and largest center in the country for the conservation of biodiversity of living plants, a leading scientific institution in the field of introduction, acclimatization, physiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and ecology of plants. Research and practical work in the field of plant introduction has ensured the creation of a gene pool of ornamental and economically useful introduced plants from more than 15 thousand names.
In accordance with the Charter, the main goal of the Central Botanical Garden is to conduct scientific research in the field of introduction, botany, physiology, biochemistry and biotechnology, ecology, green construction and phytodesign, rational sustainable use and protection of plant resources, as well as the preservation of the gene pool of plants of the world flora.
The Central Botanical Garden is one of the oldest botanical institutions in Belarus. In 1999, by decision of the Government of the Republic of Belarus, it was given the status of a scientific object constituting a national heritage. The Central Botanical Garden has been declared a botanical natural monument of national significance and historical and cultural value. Today it is a unique natural object of landscape gardening art, combining the functions of a metropolitan landmark and an important cultural, educational, ecological and educational center.
The main areas of scientific and technical activities:
- efficient use, renewal and protection of plant resources;
- identification of physiological and biochemical patterns and mechanisms for the formation of plant resistance and productivity;
- creation of scientific foundations for the introduction, protection, selection and management of acclimatization processes and - biological productivity of economically useful plants based on traditional and modern methods of biotechnology and genetic engineering;
- biological monitoring, ecology;
- industrial botany;
- green construction and phytodesign;
- use of plant resources in industry, agriculture, medicine;
- solving problems of biosafety of biological methods and technologies.
Promising areas of work of the Central Botanical Garden:
- development of scientific foundations and practical measures for the effective sustainable use of plant resources in the economy and social sphere of the country, for the conservation of the gene pool of rare and endangered species and habitats of representatives of the Belarusian flora.
- creation of new competitive varieties of ornamental, medicinal, spicy-aromatic, bioenergy plants and projects of original decorative compositions for various landscaping objects, including interiors.
- development of effective methods for accelerated production of planting material based on in vitro culture and methods of identification and protection from bacterial and viral contamination in order to obtain healthy planting material.
- study of the genetic diversity of plants and plant communities, their habitats and ecosystems, solving issues of systematics and taxonomy using traditional and molecular genetic approaches.
