Summary
The Polessian Institute of Plant Growing offers consumers services for the development and adaptation in the customer's conditions of recommendations for chemical protection of seed and commercial crops of Belarusian-bred corn hybrids under an outsourcing agreement and is looking for partners interested in a distribution services agreement.
Description
Chemical weed control is one of the main elements of corn cultivation technology. Incorrect selection of herbicides and violation of the regulations for their use can lead to a significant shortfall in yield, and often to its complete loss. This is primarily due to the weak competitiveness of corn plants in the early stages of growth in the fight for light and moisture in relation to weeds. Only within 10 days after germination do corn plants not react to weeds. If weeds are destroyed 20-40 days after germination, then the corn yield decreases by 10-40%. That is, the application of herbicides to weedy corn crops after 40-50 days from the moment of emergence may be ineffective. With the wrong choice of herbicide and violation of the regulations for the use of herbicides, the effect of chemical weeding can be minimal, and the loss of seed yield can reach 100%.

In this regard, hybrid seed producers are faced with the issue of choosing a herbicide and the timing of its application, taking into account soil and climatic conditions and the sensitivity of parental forms of corn to most active substances.

The recommendations cover the following issues.
1. Weed protection.
2. Disease protection.
3. Protection from the corn stem borer.

Additional comments
The Institute is one of the leading institutes in the Republic of Belarus in the selection of corn and sunflower, it is engaged in the creation of varieties of annual and perennial forage grasses using traditional breeding methods, reproduction and obtaining original seeds. Particular attention is paid to the issues of optimization of technologies for the cultivation of grain, legumes, corn, sunflower, annual and perennial forage grasses in specific soil and climatic zones of the Polesie zone.

The main areas of scientific and practical activity of the enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" are the introduction of new competitive varieties and hybrids of agricultural crops in the agro-industrial complex of the Republic of Belarus and the development of scientifically sound and economically justified technologies for their cultivation, as well as:
- Creation of productive, high-quality varieties and hybrids of corn, sunflower, perennial grasses, grain and vegetable crops using traditional breeding methods.
- Improvement of farming systems taking into account specific soil and climatic zones of the region, ensuring the receipt of an economically viable crop yield, preservation of soil fertility.
- Improvement of existing and development of new economically viable technologies for growing and harvesting forage crops.
- Optimization of crop production technologies that allow for the maximum realization of the genetic potential of plants in specific soil and climatic zones of the Gomel region while minimizing resource costs.

The main areas of applied and fundamental research in the Republican Scientific Subsidiary Unitary Enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" are carried out at the expense of the republican budget, as well as at its own expense and on a contractual basis with other interested organizations.

Breeding areas.
- breeding of universal, grain and silage corn hybrids;
- breeding of sunflower hybrids;
- selection of annual and perennial forage crops (sorghum crops, alfalfa, canary grass, green-cut rye, silphium);
- selection of grain and leguminous crops (lake wheat, lake barley, peas, soybeans).

Preservation and study of the genetic fund.
Research is carried out under the coordination of the National Bank of Plant Genetic Resources of the Republic of Belarus, through which the exchange of collection material is carried out. Direct links have been established with VIR.

The Republican Scientific Subsidiary Unitary Enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" is the curator of national collections of corn, sunflower, forage crops, perennial grasses.

Development of technologies for the cultivation of agricultural crops.
The Republican Scientific Subsidiary Unitary Enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" specializes in the development of economically sound and environmentally friendly technologies for the production of plant products, allowing for the maximum realization of the genetic potential of plants in specific ecological zones of the Republic of Belarus with minimal energy costs.

Ecological variety testing.
The Republican Scientific Subsidiary Unitary Enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" provides services for conducting ecological competitive variety testing of agricultural crops in the conditions of the south of the Republic of Belarus.
