Description
The Institute of Physical and Organic Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus offers ion-exchange substrates (ion exchange soils) for growing and reproducing BIONA plants, developed for special purposes (growing plants in space, at Arctic stations, atomic icebreakers and at other facilities where the use of conventional soils is impossible) ... For the first time goes on sale for widespread use by the population.

The basis of BIONA substrates are synthetic and natural (clinoptilolite) ion exchangers, saturated with biogenic macro- and microelements.

Physical form - granular and fibrous types of ion-exchange substrates BIONA have been developed:
* granular substrates consist of irregularly shaped granules of orange, yellow, gray color 0.5..2.5 mm in size;
* fibrous substrates are non-woven needle-punched (needle-punched) materials with a thickness of 2..10 mm in yellow or orange-yellow color.

Main characteristics:
* BIONA substrates are a complete nutrient medium for growing plants, which does not require fertilization during the entire period of use.
* Contains 4..8 wt.% Of nutrients available to plants in an exchangeable osmotically inactive form.
* They have a neutral reaction, the pH of the aqueous suspension is 6.0..7.0.
* Productivity without additional fertilizers: granular substrates - over 1..3 kg of raw plant biomass from 1 kg of dry substrate; fibrous substrates - over 1..2 kg of raw plant biomass from 1 kg of substrate.
* Tested in the cultivation and reproduction of a large number of food and ornamental plants, the products grown on them have passed the sanitary and hygienic assessment.
* Withstand sterilization and autoclaving.
* After depletion, they can be regenerated using a special technology.

Highly productive nutrient medium for growing, propagation and adaptation of plants in artificial conditions. Fertility-improving additive-fertilizer (in the amount of 1..10% by volume) to soils, peat, sand, etc. Recommended for:
* growing plants in artificial conditions;
* adaptation of weakened plants in biological research, treatment of domestic plants;
* growing seedlings;
* propagation by cuttings of ornamental crops, grapes, potatoes, etc .;
* restoring the nutritional properties of depleted soils without replanting plants.

BIONA substrates have sanitary and hygienic passports and are allowed for growing food plants.

Advantages and Innovations
BION substrates:
* allow to stabilize the mineral nutrition of plants for a long time and eliminate the need for periodic fertilizing;
* improve the quality of grown plants, their appearance, accelerate growth;
* do not contain organic additives, weed seeds, pests, and plant pathogens.

Plants grow well on pure BION. It does not cause root burn and this distinguishes it from all known types of fertilizers.

The production of ion-exchange substrates BIONA is carried out at the experimental-industrial site of the Institute (capacity up to 20 tons/year).

Ion-exchange substrates BIONA are widely used by seed farms of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian Research Institute of Potato Growing for accelerated propagation of healthy elite potatoes by cuttings in vivo, in biological research at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The catalysts developed at the Institute were introduced at the largest chemical enterprises. An antiblock composition was introduced throughout the industry to prevent sticking of the cellophane film during its production. Industrial radiation-chemical technology for producing blood plasma substitutes "Rondex" and "Neorondex" was developed.

The Institute has taken a leading position in the world in the development, manufacture, and use of ion-exchange fibrous materials and artificial substrates for growing plants. The work of the Institute in the field of membranes and membrane technologies is widely known. Membrane materials for ultra- and microfiltration have been developed and produced in the form of continuous sheets and capillaries, cassette, roll, and hollow fiber elements for use in power engineering, food, pharmaceutical, electronic and other industries.

The scientists of the Institute have discovered and studied reactions: heterocyclization of azomethines with carbonyl compounds, hydroamination of oxygen-containing compounds, initiated decarboxylation of mercury acylates, construction of an isothiazole ring from 2-nitropentachlorobutadiene and sulfur. Convenient methods for the synthesis of benzoquinolines, amines, pyridines, organomercury compounds, electrochemical methods for the preparation of p-complexes of transition metals, methods for the synthesis of various functional substituted organohalogen compounds, carboranes and peroxides have been developed.

The Institute's activities are aimed at developing scientific principles and technologies for creating new polymeric materials with special properties (selectively permeable, sorption, ion-exchange, catalytically active) for use in industry, ecology, agriculture, water treatment; development of synthesis methods and technologies for producing medicinal substances based on amino acids and their derivatives, biologically active substances and compositions for medicine and agriculture, functionally substituted organic and organoelement compounds.

The Institute carries out international scientific and technical cooperation within the framework of direct agreements with scientific institutions of Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Sweden, China, etc. firms of Saudi Arabia, Germany, Korea, Russia, USA.
