Summary
The Polessian Institute of Plant Growing offers consumers the VIVALEN 1118 silage-type corn hybrid for the production of their own hybrid corn seeds under a license agreement, seed material under a manufacturing agreement, and is looking for partners interested in a distribution services agreement.
Description
Morphological features.
Plants in the period of milk ripeness of grain of medium height (250.0-274.9 cm). Stem is straight or very slightly curved. Anthocyanin coloration of the leaf sheath above the upper ear is absent or very weak, internodes of the stem and aerial roots are weak. Leaves are green, slightly curved, waviness is absent or very weak. Blooming time of panicle is from early to middle. Anthocyanin coloration of spikelet scales of panicle, their bases and anthers is weak, silk is absent or very weak. Lateral branches of panicle at the end of flowering are from medium length to long, curvature is absent or very slightly curved, located at a small angle, their number is small. Upper ear is conical-cylindrical in shape, from medium length to long, medium diameter, on a leg from short to medium length. Anthocyanin coloration of scales of the cob rachis is of medium intensity. Dent-type grain, yellow-orange upper and lower parts of the grain.
Agricultural and biological characteristics.
FAO 230. Simple, mid-season hybrid. Intended for growing for silage. For 2019-2021 years of testing, the average dry matter yield was 205 c/ha, the maximum - 262 c/ha was obtained at the State Agricultural Institution "Nesvizhskaya SS" in 2020. The average dry matter content in green mass is 32.2%. The protein content in dry matter of green mass is 8.46%, the protein yield per hectare is 13.8 c. The hybrid slowly releases moisture during grain ripening, therefore, in the conditions of the republic, the hybrid is intended for use in silage.
Cultivation approval:
- for grain: -
- for silage: RB.
The information is posted in the "Album of Promising Developments of the NAS of Belarus Organizations for the Real Sector of the Economy" (2023), pp. 458 - 459. (in Russian)
More details on the Institute's website in the "Breeding Innovations" section. (in Russian)
It is possible to sell seeds of parental forms of the new corn hybrid for sowing F 1 hybridization plots on an area of more than 1000 hectares, the estimated volume of hybrid seeds is 2000 tons.

It is possible to sell seeds of parental forms of the new corn hybrid for sowing F 1 hybridization plots on an area of more than 1000 hectares, the estimated volume of hybrid seeds is 2000 tons.
Advantages and Innovations
The hybrid is characterized by intensive juvenile development and a high rate of accumulation of vegetative mass in the initial period of growth. It has highindicators of adaptability, stability and resistance to pre-harvest lodging. The potential for dry matter yield is more than 200 c/ha.
The total economic effect of producing 50 tons of seeds of parental forms of the new corn hybrid will be 500 thousand US dollars.
The corn hybrid of Belarusian selection was created using new source material and has a consistently high forage productivity.

Additional comments
The Institute is one of the leading institutes in the Republic of Belarus in the selection of corn and sunflower, it is engaged in the creation of varieties of annual and perennial forage grasses using traditional breeding methods, reproduction and obtaining original seeds. Particular attention is paid to the issues of optimization of technologies for the cultivation of grain, legumes, corn, sunflower, annual and perennial forage grasses in specific soil and climatic zones of the Polesie zone.
The main areas of scientific and practical activity of the enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" are the introduction of new competitive varieties and hybrids of agricultural crops in the agro-industrial complex of the Republic of Belarus and the development of scientifically sound and economically justified technologies for their cultivation, as well as:
- Creation of productive, high-quality varieties and hybrids of corn, sunflower, perennial grasses, grain and vegetable crops using traditional breeding methods.
- Improvement of farming systems taking into account specific soil and climatic zones of the region, ensuring the receipt of an economically viable crop yield, preservation of soil fertility.
- Improvement of existing and development of new economically viable technologies for growing and harvesting forage crops.
- Optimization of crop production technologies that allow for the maximum realization of the genetic potential of plants in specific soil and climatic zones of the Gomel region while minimizing resource costs.
The main areas of applied and fundamental research in the Republican Scientific Subsidiary Unitary Enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" are carried out at the expense of the republican budget, as well as at its own expense and on a contractual basis with other interested organizations.
Breeding areas.
- breeding of universal, grain and silage corn hybrids;
- breeding of sunflower hybrids;
- selection of annual and perennial forage crops (sorghum crops, alfalfa, canary grass, green-cut rye, silphium);
- selection of grain and leguminous crops (lake wheat, lake barley, peas, soybeans).
Preservation and study of the genetic fund.
Research is carried out under the coordination of the National Bank of Plant Genetic Resources of the Republic of Belarus, through which the exchange of collection material is carried out. Direct links have been established with VIR.
The Republican Scientific Subsidiary Unitary Enterprise "Polessian Institute of Plant Growing" is the curator of national collections of corn, sunflower, forage crops, perennial grasses.
