Summary
The Instrument Manufacturing Plant Optron offers consumers an airless tire that improves the technical and economic performance of vehicles under a manufacturing agreement and is looking for partners to conclude a distribution services agreement.
Description
An airless tire for vehicles (non-pneumatic tires) is an innovative type of wheel in which elasticity and shock absorption are provided not by compressed air, but by a special flexible structure made of polymer spokes or honeycombs. Today, they are widely used on special equipment (skid steers, ATVs, lawn mowers), military vehicles, bicycles, and scooters, and leading tire manufacturers are actively testing them for passenger cars.

Structurally, airless tires are divided into two main types.

Open (spoke or honeycomb) tires consist of a central hub connected to a rubber tread by multiple flexible polyurethane spokes. The spokes deform under the weight of the vehicle, absorbing road imperfections.
Closed tires externally resemble regular tires, but are filled internally with elastic fiberglass or polymer porous materials.

Key technical properties.
Absolute puncture protection - the tire remains functional even with through-puncture damage.
Speed limit - for most mass-produced commercial tires, the safe limit is up to 80 km/h due to intense heat and vibration at high speeds.
Environmentally friendly - these tires last significantly longer and require only the top tread layer to be replaced.
High rigidity - due to the weight of the polymers, they provide a firmer ride compared to traditional pneumatic tires.

Major manufacturers.
Michelin (France) - The undisputed leader and pioneer in the industry. Produces a series of ready-to-use Michelin X Tweel wheels for loaders, light construction, and garden equipment. Together with GM, they are actively developing and testing the UPTIS project - an airless tire for mass-produced passenger cars and electric vehicles.
Bridgestone (Japan) - Developing their own Air Free Concept. The manufacturer relies on environmentally friendly thermoplastic resins that are fully recyclable. The primary focus is on commercial vehicles, bicycles, and light urban electric vehicles.
Hankook (South Korea) - Unveiled the i-Flex concept tire series. They utilize a complex biomimetic structure (honeycomb) to evenly distribute loads and successfully pass high-speed testing.
Goodyear (USA) - Focused on airless solutions for autonomous vehicles, delivery robots, and passenger shuttles, testing tires in intensive urban conditions.
Polaris (USA) - The first to launch mass production of vehicles (ATVs and quad bikes) with TerrainArmor airless tires, resistant to bullets and extreme loads.

The Instrument Manufacturing Plant Optron developed an airless tire and testing methods for personal mobility device tires. The properties of polymer and composite matrices affecting the strength characteristics of airless tires have been studied, improving the technical and economic performance of vehicle operation.

This information is published in the Catalogue "100 Best Developments of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for the National Economy in 2022–2023" (2024), pp. 106–107.
Advantages and Innovations
- Reduced drive energy consumption by 15% when driving on hard surfaces;
- Puncture resistance due to the use of elastic polymers instead of an air chamber;
- Reduced risk of overheating due to the absence of an air chamber;
- Better maneuverability in various terrain conditions compared to air-filled tires.
