Description
Highly nutritious grass mixtures based on smooth brome are the standard for producing high-quality roughage (hay, haylage, and silage). Thanks to its robust root system and biological characteristics, smooth brome forms the foundation of long-lasting (up to 7–10 years), highly productive hayfields that yield 2–3 full cuts per season.

Properties of smooth brome and mixtures based on it.
Smooth brome is a tall, rhizomatous grass possessing a unique set of qualities for hay production. 100 kg of smooth brome hay contains up to 52–57 feed units and approximately 5–6 kg of digestible protein. When mowed before the flowering stage, the forage has a tender texture and is readily consumed by all types of cattle and horses. The stand reaches peak productivity in the second or third year of growth and maintains it consistently for 6–10 years. It possesses an excellent ability to regrow quickly after mowing. It is exceptionally winter-hardy, withstands spring frosts and prolonged flooding (up to 30–50 days), yet remains drought-resistant thanks to its deep root system.

Sowing smooth brome in mixtures with other crops addresses the issue of feed balance.
With legumes (alfalfa, red clover, sainfoin). The legume component enriches the mixture with protein and fixes atmospheric nitrogen, thereby replacing expensive mineral fertilizers. A "smooth brome + alfalfa" or "smooth brome + sainfoin" mixture is considered the gold standard for nutritional value.
With other grasses (timothy, meadow/tall fescue, festulolium). It ensures a dense stand structure, provides protection against weeds, and guarantees a stable total yield of green mass across years with varying moisture levels.

The Polesie Agrarian Ecological Institute offers grass mixture formulations for hay production based on smooth brome and high-performance species and varieties of perennial grasses.
Services include the annual maintenance of elite and super-elite seed crops of the 'Vydatny' smooth brome variety, as well as recommendations on smooth brome cultivation, the inclusion of legume components in hay-producing mixtures, and mixture formulations tailored to specific growing conditions.

The Polesie Agro-Ecological Institute conducted a research project aimed at developing hay-producing grass mixtures based on Belarusian varieties of smooth brome; these mixtures are capable of yielding three cuts and providing a metabolizable energy content of 10 MJ/kg and a crude protein content of at least 16%. The results of this research were utilized in formulating the grass mixtures.

The Institute’s primary mission is to conduct fundamental and applied research aimed at developing scientifically grounded measures for the conservation and sustainable use of the natural resource potential of the Polesie region.

Research areas:
- Agrobiology. Scientific substantiation of key elements in the cultivation technology for forage crops (including non-traditional varieties) and the establishment of highly productive, environment-stabilizing plant communities in agro-ecologically challenged areas of the Western Polesie agricultural landscape, taking into account modern climate change;
- Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology. Study of the migration of xenobiotics (compounds foreign to living organisms that do not participate in cellular structural or energy metabolism) within ecological systems and the mechanisms of their incorporation into natural cycles; investigation of the consequences of altered natural material flows in the biosphere—such as ecological imbalances, transformation of biosphere components, biodiversity loss, and human health risks. Primary efforts focus on studying the impact of heavy metals on the biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems, as well as their biological and ecological fate;
- Ecosystem Optimization. Intensification of innovative approaches to the conservation and interactive use of landscape and biological diversity and the agricultural potential of the Polesie region, in the interests of sustainable development and improved quality of life. Promotion of environmental and socio-economic innovations within the framework of local sustainable development strategies and "green" economy projects in the Belarusian Polesie;
- Hydroecology and Ecotechnologies. Assessment of water quality (drinking, surface, and wastewater); numerous projects are being implemented regarding the setting of standards for water protection and use, as well as waste processing; scientific research is being conducted in relevant and promising areas related to improving water quality in our region and minimizing pollution risks;
- Feed quality. Analysis of compliance by agro-industrial organizations with technological regulations and standards during agricultural production.

Research is being conducted within the framework of international collaborations and projects across various scientific fields, including ecology, soil science, zoology and botany, hydrology, biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology, plant physiology and biochemistry, and agricultural sciences.
