Summary
The Centre for Identification Systems offers GLN registration services to consumers under an outsourcing agreement and is looking for partners interested in a distribution services agreement.
Description
A Global Location Number (GLN) does not entitle you to receive a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) barcode.
The GLN is intended solely for use in electronic data interchange.
A significant volume of paper documentation is created and processed daily throughout the world. This includes purchase orders, invoices, product catalogs, sales reports, etc. Typically, such information precedes, accompanies, and follows the movement of goods in commercial transactions. In modern business practice, information exchange between partners is accomplished through electronic data interchange (EDI), presented in a standardized format.
The GS1 system provides a universal method for identifying parties and their locations.
A GLN (Global Location Number) is a single international identification number designed to accurately and concisely identify both enterprises as a whole and their branches and divisions; Departments that do not have the status of independent business entities (e.g., accounting, payroll, supply, sales, etc.). In addition, the GLN is intended to identify physical objects (a separate room in a building, a warehouse, a delivery point, or a transfer point).
A step-by-step procedure for assigning a global GLN is available on the "Centre for Identification Systems" website here. (in Russian)

Advantages and Innovations
The GLN is generated according to rules that ensure each number is internationally unique. To this end, the following format and structure requirements are established:
- it is digital;
- it has a fixed length of 13 digits, which must be processed as a single unit;
- it begins with the numbering organization prefix assigned by the GS1 International Numbering Organization;
- the structure of the digits following the prefix is determined in the order determined by each national numbering organization. The requirements for uniqueness and non-repeatability of assigned GLNs must be met;
- it ends with a check digit calculated from the values of the preceding 12 digits.
Although GLNs are generated according to the same rules as 13-digit trade item numbers, they cannot be represented using GS1 symbology as a GTIN-13 barcode. It can only be applied as a GS1-128 barcode using the Application Identifier in the shipping label or EANCOM messages.
