At present, the Institute of Vegetable Growing is one of the leading agrarian scientific institutions in Belarus.

Main areas of research:
• Creation of varieties and hybrids of various types of cabbage using DNA analysis methods that have a high productivity potential, are resistant to biotic and abiotic environmental factors, with good taste and meet the requirements of intensive cultivation technologies;
• primary seed production and pre-propagation of new original varieties and heterotic hybrids of cabbage crops;
• creation of highly productive varieties of onion vegetable crops that are resistant to biotic and abiotic environmental factors, suitable for mechanized cultivation, long-term storage and processing;
• creation of a genetic bank of onion vegetables by attracting materials from world collections, as well as obtaining a new source material through intervarietal hybridization;
• creation of varieties and hybrids of table root crops (beetroot, table carrot, daikon, radish, parsnip, black radish) with consistently high productivity, marketability, high taste and improved biochemical composition of products;
• creation of a gene pool of donors of economically valuable traits of table root crops;
• creation of heterotic hybrids and varieties of bee-pollinated and parthenocarpic cucumbers for open ground and film greenhouses with high taste and technological qualities;
• creation of highly productive varieties of pumpkin, zucchini and squash, predominantly female type of flowering, with a compact bush, with a variety of shape and color of the fruit, with a high content of dry
substances, carotene, sugars and minimal accumulation of nitrates;
• Creation of new high-yielding varieties of leguminous vegetable crops with high product quality, different maturity groups and areas of use, suitable for advanced growing technologies;
• obtaining and improving the source material for the selection of legumes;
• preservation and replenishment of the domestic gene pool of legumes;
• creation of high-yielding varieties and hybrids of nightshade crops (tomato, pepper, eggplant, physalis) for film greenhouses and open ground with complex disease resistance based on innovative molecular genetic methods;
• Creation of tomato lines resistant to cladosporiosis, TMV, Fusarium, providing high heterosis in early maturity and productivity, adapted to abiotic environmental factors, etc.;
• creation of lines of pepper and eggplant, combining early maturity, high productivity and resistance to stressful conditions;
• obtaining original seeds of created varieties and hybrids of nightshade crops;
study of the structure and dynamics of development of phytopathogens in vegetable crops;
• development of methods for assessing the disease resistance of vegetable crops on artificial infectious backgrounds;
• identification and creation of initial material with resistance of tomato to late blight, Alternaria, cladosporiosis, TMV, cucumber - to olive blotch, powdery mildew, peronosporosis; cabbage - to phomosis and vascular bacteriosis, carrots - to brown leaf spot;
• carrying out research work on in vitro cultivation of vegetable crops for the needs of breeding and on the use of molecular genetic methods in the breeding process of vegetable crops;
• development of a nutrition system for vegetable crops in the open field and in film greenhouses;
• study of the effect and aftereffect of green manure crops, organic fertilizers, simple and complex mineral fertilizers on the yield of vegetable crops, soil fertility, its water and physical
and agrochemical properties;
• development of technologies for growing vegetable crops;
• introduction of developed nutrition systems and technologies for growing vegetable crops in the farms of the republic;
