The Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library provides consumers and readers with services for using the library collection under an outsourcing agreement and/or subcontract and is looking for partners interested in a distribution services agreement.

Library users have the right to the following free services:

01. obtaining information on the composition and content of library collections through the system of catalogues, card indexes, information retrieval systems, databases and other forms of library information;
02. obtaining consultations on the use of the reference and search apparatus (catalogues, card indexes, databases, reference and information publications, etc.);
03. information on new publications and documents based on a permanent request (selective dissemination of information - SDI);
04. obtaining advisory assistance in finding sources of information;
05. using open-access electronic information resources;
06. performing oral bibliographic and factual information;
07. using free virtual library services;
08. participation in free cultural and educational events held by the library;
09. access to printed and electronic information resources on the library premises;
10. organization and conduct of excursions around the library;
11. wireless Internet access (Wi-Fi).

By the 1980s, the Library had become one of the largest information centers not only in Belarus, but also in the USSR. In 1990, it acquired the status of a research institution.

Currently, the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library (it has been called this since 1981; before that, it was called the V.G. Belinsky Fundamental Library since 1948, and the Yakub Kolas Library since 1966) has the largest collection of foreign scientific publications in Belarus on the exact and natural sciences, is a depository storage center in the field of natural and exact sciences; a repository of historical, cultural and intellectual heritage of Belarus, a methodological center for librarianship and bibliography, a research center in the field of library science, bibliography, book science, book culture and bibliometrics.

Its collection, which is based on scientific publications, numbers over 4 million storage units.
The Library collection also includes other collections that make up the collection of the historical, cultural, scientific and intellectual heritage of Belarus. This makes it an institution of culture and memory. These collections include: a collection of Cyrillic printed books from the 16th to early 20th centuries, a collection of handwritten books from the 17th to 20th centuries, a collection of civil printed books from the 18th to first quarter of the 19th century, a collection of "Belarusian Studies" from the 16th to 21st centuries, a collection of foreign language publications from the 15th to 21st centuries, a collection of Western European publications from the 15th to 18th centuries.

Today, the academic library operates in the context of dynamic changes in the information market, updating the information environment, and changes in the needs, wishes and expectations of users. Its activities are implemented in the following main areas.

In the field of information support for scientific activities - participation in the creation of search engines that provide users with free access to bibliographic resources of the collections of the largest libraries in the country; expansion of the circle of users from among the employees of the organizations of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, receiving access to electronic resources in the workplace.

In the field of scientific communications — providing open access to digitized documents from the Library collections, which are the national intellectual and historical-cultural heritage.

In the field of scientific activity — expansion of the topics of scientific research.

In the field of popularization of scientific and scientific-technical knowledge — the use of new forms of this popularization.

The Library, as one of the largest information and library centers of the country, actually represents a consortium of institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for subscription to unique scientific resources of remote access.

The Library carries out international scientific cooperation in various areas: within the framework of book exchange and scientific research work, in the field of organizing and holding international events, preparing for the publication of scientific materials.

As a scientific center, it works in the following areas: study of writing, book culture and reading using anthropologically oriented approaches; study of the publication activity of scientists of Belarus; history of science and scientific knowledge; publication of printed and handwritten monuments of the country's historical and cultural heritage; introduction of sources on the history of the NAS of Belarus into scientific circulation. In most of these areas, the Library occupies a leading position in Belarus. It has absolute primacy in the activity of presenting and describing early printed publications of the 15th–18th centuries. It is the country's main center in the field of studying reading issues, as well as the publication activity of Belarusian scientists.
